It was a really happy occasion to see and hear my Estey Chancel organ used by Iarla Ó’ Lionáird from The Gloaming in the National Concert Hall in Dublin during their February/March tour 2016. Iarla used the reed organ to beautiful effect as he provided accompaniment to Martin Hayes, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Denis Cahill and Thomas Bartlett.
Incidentally Iarla was heavily influenced in his tradition Irish singing as a member of Cór Chúil Aodha in West Cork under the direction of the great Seán Ó’Riada. It was listening to this same choir, using a Mason and Hamlin reed organ for accompaniment, that first piqued my interested in the reed organ as it enthralled me.
The Gloaming is making a huge impact in the world of Irish traditional music and well worth checking out. The vocals of Iarla Ó’ Lionáird have been heard in such movies as The Gangs of New York, Hotel Rowanda, Calvary and Brooklyn.
I couldn't take many photos when I attended the concert but below are some I did manage to snatch and some I found in other places.
